Faculty members who are interested in finding out more about gaming, or considering/interested-in adapting gaming related approaches/materials in their classes will find this panel especially relevant. In all cases, the panelists will present examples and results from their recent work where CS concepts are learned while programming games. These approaches are based on different pedagogical philosophies and implementation platforms, yet all are designed to teach fundamental concepts via programming computer games. At their core, these approaches can be broadly classified as either: experiences in which students create complete games of their own or experiences in which students implement fundamental CS concepts to complete "skeleton" games that have been provided by the instructor. This panel presents four recent approaches at integrating computer gaming into introductory programming courses. The focus of this panel is not the debate about whether games should be used in introductory computer science, but rather if they are going to be used what are some possible ways to do so. Although there are potential pitfalls and it has been argued that gender biasedgames can further alienate under-represented groups, it has also been shown that with careful design and articulation, combining CS classes with games at the introductory level can help recruit and retain. (1) Mixed development with students of diverse ages and educational levels Using this framework, we worked on the following three educational problems in Japan: Furthermore, by implementing the plan–do–check–act (PDCA) cycle in each development, students had the opportunity to identify and solve problems during the semester. Students had the opportunity to gain experience, working with different people also, by being provided a time limit for the development process, they learned how to manage development time effectively. In one semester, we executed a game development process thrice, changing members every time. In this paper, we will introduce a game production program to iterate multiple game development cycles in a limited period. However, there was not a big difference in understanding programming concepts between the two genders. The results also show that females’ scores with more coding time were better than their males’ counterparts while males’ scores with less coding time were better than the females of the same group. The results show that the students’ programming knowledge increased in the posttest and their confidence in answering the programming questions increased for both genders as well. Pretest-posttest experimental methodology was used to collect the data from 65 high school students before and after three coding workshops. In this paper we explore gender differences in understanding computer programming concepts and whether the use of art has any effect on improving this understanding for both genders.

Code Genie web-based Integrated Development Environment (IDE) was designed and developed for this study so that a student can write JavaScript code that produces artwork and share with other students through this environment. This study aims to explore how to increase students’ interest in programming, especially females and underrepresented minorities, through the use of art and animation elements. Statistics show that the computer science field is currently dominated by White and Asian males.
